For example, in 1966 only the El Camino interior codes were different from all other body styles even though the seat colors were identical? Take the red bench seat here with code 748-A, it's the same red bench seat coded 747-A for everything else in 66. GM did some crazy things back then, often for a single year. The only time a KC car would get a "B" code for a manual 3-speed is with the SS396 or 396 engine option in an El Camino since the 3-speed behind the 396 engine was always floor shifted and, as such, required a different floor pan. ![]() Since there is NO optional transmission code (L for a 4-speed or M for a Powerglide) the base 3-speed manual transmission is what it got. In this case, "E" in group 1 represents a change from standard glass to tinted glass and "K" in group 2 indicates a different firewall and dash to accommodate air conditioning. ![]() The group codes (1 thru 5) indicate changes to be made from a base car that Fisher Body had to deal with and nothing related to the Chevrolet side of the plant. A 4-speed car requires a different floorboard to accommodate the 4-speed hump, that is what the "L" in group 2 represents. As for it being a factory 4-speed car, the El Camino in question is not, in fact it's a manual 3-speed car. I have a matrix on ChevelleStuff - Trim Tagsįactory A/C was available as an option on 6-cylinder engines as well. The car's VIN is the only foolproof means of determining engine type (except for 66-68 SS396 Chevelles as those were all V8). The same applies to all other series and/or body styles. If, IF, this were a Fremont El Camino and was a 6-cylinder (13580 VIN), the trim tag would also show 13580 as the Style number - all other plants building an El Camino in 1966 would show a Fisher Body Style number of 13680 regardless. Until 1969 the ONLY plants that used the same Fisher Body Style number to match the VIN were Fremont and Oshawa (plus Framingham in 1969). The Fisher Body Style number on the trim tag DOES NOT indicate 6- or 8-cylinder engine for Kansas City.
